The default line spacing is generally good, but a line spacing of 1.1 or 1.2 may look better for certain fonts.
For the most part, there is no need to change the line spacing for your paragraphs when you format your novel – the default is good. You might like to experiment with a slightly increased spacing – at about 1.1 or 1.2 times the default – maybe even going up to 1.4 – depending on the font. This can make the text a bit easier on the eye – it’s easier for the eye to parse different lines of the text, which makes reading easier and faster. This depends on the font – some fonts will look good at 1.2 times the default line spacing – some will look a bit sparse.
Using line spacing at a multiple less than 1 – at 0.9, say – will make the text look denser – which can have a certain aesthetic appeal, but it almost always makes the text harder to read, so should be avoided.
You should never use double line spacing for your finished book. (Only use that when editing and proofreading.)
